Ban on importation of live pigs and their fresh products from Namibia and south Africa due to outbreak of African Swine Fever

The Department of Veterinary Services wishes to inform farmers and the general public that:

  1. There has been a reported outbreak of African Swine Fever(ASF), a highly contagious disease of domestic and wild pigs, in Namibia and the Republic of South Africa.
  2. Due to thus outbreak a ban on importation of live pigs and their fresh products from Namibia is hereby imposed and concurrently uphold the current ban on South African pigs and their products. This is with immediate effect.
  3. Farmers are advised to confine their pigs in pigsties and report all sick or dead pigs (both domestic, free range and warthogs) to their local Department of Veterinary Services or Police.

The public will be updated on new developments regarding the situation.
