| Requirement to apply for a Permit to Import Explosives | Permit Requirement | This Explosive Import permit is a document that allows the holder to import commercial explosives as utilised in mining as well as the propellant/explosive used in fireworks. | To be able to acquire this permit, the person who will be handling or using the explosives must have a valid Botswana blasting licence relating to the operation he intends to use the explosives for. If the applicant is a company, this company must have in its employ, persons suitably qualified and holders of Botswana Blasting licences. Dealing in fireworks/crackers does not require that one possesses a blasting licence. The applicant must have suitably licenced storage facilities and licenced transport facilities as required by the Act BEFORE any application for import will be considered. However, to handle or use fireworks, there is no requirement to hold a blasting licence but the person/company has to acquire an authorization from the Department of Mines, as there are certain requirements that such person has to adhere to while handling or using fireworks. It is very important to note that this permit grants two permissions to the applicant - that is permission for importation of explosives/fireworks and permission for possession of explosives/ fireworks; therefore, with expiration of the permit both the permissions end.
