Name | Requirement to obtain Import Permit for Live Animals |
---|---|
Description | Live animals either domesticated or wild may be imported into Botswana from other specified countries under certain conditions, stipulated in a veterinary import permit (VIP) obtained from the Department of Veterinary Services after assessing the risks of importing such animals. |
Comments | Any import of live animals is covered by certain requirements which include among others insuring that the animal is free of disease, if necessary quarantining, various treatments, vaccinations and laboratory tests to prevent the introduction and spread of animal and human disease through the importation of live animals. Although the data base for all imports of live animal is centralised at DVS headquarters in Gaborone, for normal import requirements that appear on the data base (dogs, cats, horses, donkeys as well as some wild animals) the issue of Import permits by DVS in this category is decentralised and can be issued at any veterinary district office where a state veterinary officer is available. |
